“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things,

but learning another way to think about things.”

Flora Lewis

I began learning Spanish my sophomore year of high school in Hillsboro, Oregon. After spending a summer of high school as an exchange student in Costa Rica, I knew that I wanted to teach high school Spanish. I attended Western Oregon University, where I obtained both my bachelor's and master's degrees, and began my teaching career in 1992. I taught Spanish at various schools in Oregon including Santiam High School, Sandy High School, and Mt. Hood Community College, before joining the staff at Ridgefield High School in 2009.

The 2019-20 school year is my 28th year of teaching, and my 11th year at RHS.

I love the Spanish language and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries, and I hope that my enthusiasm carries over to my classes and students. Other things I love are spending time with my husband and my children (two teenage boys), traveling, cooking, and being active. I am a runner and an Irish stepdancer (think "Riverdance"). I have completed numerous triathlons and half marathons, and in April 2015 I completed my first full marathon (26.2 miles). I enjoy challenging myself, and am currently trying to decide what my next challenge will be!
